〔発見する， 見出す， さがし出す〕

**find

|他|〖D〗 (捜して)(人・物など)を見つける， 発見する《◆(1) 通例進行形不可. (2) この意味で find out は不可》；［SVO₁O₂/SVO₂ for O₁］ O₁(人)にO₂(物・事)を見つけてやる《◆受身形は常に O₂ be found for O₁ の形をとる》

find a way through the forest 林を抜ける道をみつける

find (a) refuge from the rain 雨宿りの場所を見つける

She put the magazine back in the same place where she found it. 彼女はその雑誌を見つけたところへ戻しておいた

Tom found me a taxi. ＝Tom found a taxi for me. ＝A taxi was found for me by Tom. トムが私にタクシーを見つけてくれた《◆^×I found the tree a place. は O₁が人・動物以外なので不可. I found a place for the tree. (その木を植える場所を見つけた)は可》.

find out

［他］(研究・計算・調査によって)(未知の事実など)を探り出す《◆単に人・物を見つける場合には用いない》

try to find out the truth 真実を見つけようとする.

**catch

|他|〖S〗〖D〗 ［通例 SVO doing］(偶然に)(人など)を(通例よくないことをしている最中に)見つける， 押さえる《◆(1) (偶然)現場を見つけるだけで， 実際に捕まえるかどうかは不明. (2) 進行形不可》

I caught my son (in the act of) stealing out of the room. ＝I caught my son while ［just as］ he was stealing... 私は息子がこっそり部屋を抜け出そうとしているところを見つけた

be caught red-handed 現行犯でつかまる；現場を見つけられる.

**discover

|他|〖S〗〖D〗 (偶然に・探検などで)(人・物を)発見する

discover him sitting ［seated］ there 彼がそこに座っているのを見つける《◆^×his sitting とはいわない》.

*detect

|他|〖D〗 《正式》(人の悪事・秘密など)を〔…に関して〕見つける， 看取する〔in〕；(別の人)が〔…しているのを〕発見する〔doing〕《◆進行形は不可》.

**sight

|他|《正式》…を見つける， 認める；…を観測する

sight a new star 新星を見つける《◆進行形不可》.

*spot

|他|《略式》(人・物)を見つける， 発見する《◆進行形不可》.
